The Benefits of Refined Hurricane Wind Footprints

Are you relying on NOAA for your hurricane risk information?

While NOAA data is in the public domain, many carriers need more accurate exposure and loss assessments. Juniper Re has a better solution.

More Precise & Direct Response Planning

To assist our clients in pre- and post-event hurricane planning, Juniper Re licenses data to deliver hyper-accurate wind footprints.

This offering includes high-definition wind field data and quantifies forecast uncertainties by assessing wind speed probabilities for each 1 km grid cell in a hurricane’s path days in advance.

EXAMPLE 1: POST EVENT

Hurricane Debby

The next slide shows high-level and zoomed-in views of the wind fields for Hurricane Debby.

The difference in granularity is clear, especially in the landfall view, where NOAA has a much larger swath of hurricane-force winds and very smooth transitions in wind speeds compared to Juniper Re’s more refined view.

Map

USING A NATIONWIDE MARKET SHARE SAMPLE DATA

~7,000 or 17% fewer risks

were exposed to tropical storm-force winds (39+ mph) according to Juniper, compared to NOAA.

97% fewer risks

were subject to hurricane-force winds.

EXAMPLE 2: POST EVENT

Hurricane Ian

Using a more intense storm like Hurricane Ian truly demonstrates the value Juniper Re offers.

The difference by storm category and detail level are highlighted in both the first and second landfalls.

Maps

USING A NATIONWIDE MARKET SHARE SAMPLE DATA

~25,000 or 50% more risks

were exposed to tropical storm-force winds (39+ mph)  according to Juniper, compared to NOAA.

The difference was driven by the Carolinas and Georgia, where Juniper had twice the number of risks exposedThis stark contrast emphasizes NOAA’s less sophisticated approach versus our detailed, actionable data.

Analyses like these highlight the importance of understanding data source limitations and utilizing superior data sources.
